Didn't You Used To Be The Future?
Category: Coaches Education on 19 Apr 2010

Stray dogs. Freddy Adu sees them everywhere in Thessaloníki. Scavenging trash in the vacant lot by his practice field. Wandering in packs outside the hotel he called home for two months. Shadowing pedestrians with enough menace to spark visions of giant-needled rabies shots. Greece's second-largest city is beautiful in many respects: the seaside beaches, the bustling restaurants, the sigh-inducing women. But no matter how hard Adu tries, he can't avoid the stray dogs.

How the Bundesliga puts the Premier League to shame
Category: Coaches Education on 15 Apr 2010
In Germany the fan is king. The Bundesliga has the lowest ticket prices and the highest average attendance of Europe's five major leagues. At Borussia Dortmund their giant stand holds 26,000 and costs little more than £10 for admission. Clubs limit the number of season tickets to ensure everyone has a chance to see the games, and the away team has the right to 10% of the available capacity. Match tickets double as free rail passes with supporters travelling in a relaxed atmosphere in which they can sing, drink beer to wash down their sausages, and are generally treated as desirables: a philosophy English fans can only dream of. Messi, " I know there were a lot of people telling him that I was never going to be big enough"

Messi: “I owe Barcelona for life”

FC Barcelona superstar forward Lionel Messi has a very special reason to reject the potential of being the most expensive player in footballing history. It’s not because he is waiting for the most lucrative offer, but more because he is in ‘debt’ – to be more specific, indebted for life to the club that went out of their way to give him the life that he presently has; a life’s dream fulfilled to be a professional footballer. And the best one in the world nonetheless.

"Maintaining possession, using the ball quickly and accurately, is the key"
Category: Coaches Education on 13 Apr 2010

One o'clock Saturday night, Sunday morning in the bowels of the Bernabéu and somewhere behind that mop of hair there's a look of surprise. There may even be a hint of disgust. "If you say so, mate," replies Carles Puyol, "but I don't agree. Maybe some people don't give him all the credit he deserves. Maybe you have ignored him, but we haven't. Not us. We know he's absolutely fundamental; we know that he's among the best in the world and I think everyone recognises that." Well, almost everyone. When Xavi Hernández was included in the top five at the Fifa World Player award ceremony in January 2009, alongside Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaká and Fernando Torres, the Daily Mail's headline famously ran: "The best players of the world (and Xavi).

In a RAGE over Pleasanton RAGE’s registration fee increase
Category: Coaches Education on 08 Apr 2010

Pleasant Rage Girls Soccer Association (PGSA) has announced a large increase to player registration fees this year. I don’t recall the exact amount of last years' fees, but I believe they were approximately $185/player. There is no doubt these are challenging economic times for many, but I think such a large increase is unjustified and, quite frankly, price gouging. Our school district is asking for donations of $150 per student to offset budget cuts, but at least the school district has provided detailed explanation as to the jobs that will be saved and resources for our children that will be maintained by the donations. Pleasanton Rage has provided very vague and inadequate explanations for the required increase in fees. I realize playing a recreational sport is optional, but why should the extreme cost increase prevent the youth of our city in participating?

Team against individuals, joy against duty, talent against money, Barca against Madrid
Category: Coaches Education on 08 Apr 2010
In a few years he will probably need a sole house for the collected balls of the hat-trick scored goals, while the other will probably be taken as a perfect embodiment of midfield passing, conducting, and controlling! These are respectively: the genius (which the term does not really fit him anymore, he is beyond that!) Leo Messi, and the maestro, Xavi Hernandez, conductor of FC Barcelona’s symphonies.
