MLS beginning to mimic NASL with talent imbalance, rapid expansion
Category: Coaches Education on 18 Aug 2010
Pele isn't dancing at Studio 54. The Cosmos aren't the night-life kings of New York. But suddenly pro soccer is starting to look a lot like 1977, with Major League Soccer morphing into the NASL.

Real Salt Lake has attack mentality regardless of location....hear, hear!

SANDY — The importance of scoring the first goal in soccer can't be overstated enough. It is without a doubt the most important stat in soccer.

Through this weekend's slate of MLS games, the combined record of teams scoring first is a staggering 106-8-29. The first goal all but guarantees a team at least a tie.

The first goal usually changes the entire dynamic of the game, with one team now forced to chase. Even for the best teams, a one-goal deficit is too much to overcome..

The things they say… Franz Beckenbauer
Category: Coaches Education on 16 Aug 2010
After five decades as the leading personality at Bayern, Franz Beckenbauer stepped down as club president and supervisory board chairman in November 2009. It is the end of an era the like of which will never be seen again, as Beckenbauer spent more than 50 years as player, coach or official with his home-town club. He has never been short of a witticism or ready quip either, so fcbayern.de presents a selection of the Kaiser’s most celebrated quotes. Click here to read more

‘Bayern Munich’s greatest-ever personality’
Category: Coaches Education on 16 Aug 2010
12.08.2010

What would Bayern be without Franz Beckenbauer? There would certainly be less silverware in the trophy cabinet. The Allianz Arena would probably not have been built. The likes of Robben and Ribéry might well never have come to the club. Although these are matters for conjecture, the significance of the 64-year-old’s contribution to Germany’s most successful club is hard to express in mere trophies and statistics. “Franz Beckenbauer is far and away the greatest personality Bayern Munich has ever had in its ranks,” Karl-Heinz Rummenigge summarised, “he has shaped Bayern’s history like no other.”

Johan Cruyff, innovator and renaissance man
Category: Coaches Education on 10 Aug 2010
What can one say… It’s like preaching for the converted on this blog, but come on… He was the best ever! Pele was a great athlete. Individually extremely good, like Maradona, but none was so important for the game as JC was. Obviously, his individual skills are beyond repute. His speed, his vision, his command over the ball with both the right and left foot, his goalscoring abilities (he was even a very good header of the ball)… but above all, his leadership and his innovative vision of the game… Most people have all those fantastic goals and actions etched in their minds. Mymum, God bless her soul, was pretty demented when she was old but she could still elaborate on his greatest achievements… The ADO goal, the come-back lob against Haarlem, the flying volley at Barcelona, the outside left inswinger against Argentina at the WC74, the 2-0 against Brazil, the header in the CL finals against Inter Milan…click here to read more

What went wrong with Freddy Adu?
Category: Coaches Education on 08 Aug 2010
A couple of years before YouTube, when watching a video on one's computer was a new experience, a highlight clip of Freddy Adu hit the Internet and presented a fuzzy image of what looked like a little Pele in a U.S. youth national team jersey delightfully tricking his way past opponents and scoring goals. Fast-forward eight years: the player who became a millionaire at age 13 has left us wondering what went wrong. Click here to read more

U.S. soccer could use a new system for college-age players
Category: Coaches Education on 02 Aug 2010

Four of the 23 players on the U.S. soccer team that captivated the nation's attention last month at the World Cup played four years of college soccer, and as the United States attempts to cultivate world-class players by adopting a model of development popular in other countries -- with professional affiliations starting before a player reaches voting age -- college soccer players soon could be left out of the national team equation altogether.

How Japan created a successful league
Category: Coaches Education on 02 Aug 2010

18 July ~ Imagine the scenario. England didn’t lose 4-1 to Germany at the World Cup – they were agonisingly defeated on penalties. In front of the assembled press Steven Gerrard says: "We're heartbroken but we want to thank the fans here and at home. Please keep supporting us, please keep coming to England's games and please keep supporting the English league." If you're Japanese you don't need to imagine this, because this is exactly what Makoto Hasebe, captain of the Japan team (and who plays his club football at Wolfsburg), did after their defeat to Paraguay. Now, after an eight-week mid-season break, the J-League returns and with it one of the unalloyed success stories of world football. Click here to read more

Johan Cruyff, the Oracle speaks!
Category: Coaches Education on 30 Jul 2010

Okay then, the big man has turned 60… Let’s do some more Cruyffian stuff… Ol’ Goose already published some stuff on JC during the WC2006 (which actually stopped me from posting this particular post) but let’s look at some more good stuff. Feel free to share your private memories/quotes in the thread…

Johan Cruyff (JC in Holland, El Salvador in Spain) is worldfamous for his football-skills, coaching-antics and – recently- his charity-work. But apart from that, the Dutch love the man for his use of the language as well and his truly offbeat, counter-intuitive intelligence and remarks.

While a player, he was sometimes unfathomable on and off the pitch, and since he is regularly on TV with football-analysis (although he has a strong opinion about everything; they could really ask him to analyse any subject and he’d be happy to oblige) he has become a subject for liguists and social-anthropolists at the same time.

"the paucity of the production line which has to supply England"
Category: Coaches Education on 28 Jul 2010

Fabio Capello has been castigated for his absence at England's exit from the European Under-19 Championships but how much punishment can a man who has grown up with certain basic football qualities, like controlling and passing the ball in reasonably coherent fashion, take in one long summer of discontent?
