At a party in 1998, João Havelange was asked whether he considered
himself the most powerful man in the world. It was a question suitable
for a head of state, but Havelange, who was merely the president of
FIFA, or Fédération Internationale de Football Association, soccer's
governing body, didn't blanch. He said, "I've been to Russia twice,
invited by President Yeltsin ... In Italy, I saw Pope John Paul II three
times. When I go to Saudi Arabia, King Fahd welcomes me in splendid
fashion ... Do you think a head of state will spare that much time for
just anyone? That's respect. They've got their power, and I've got mine:
the power of football, which is the greatest power there is."

A class above is how Guus Hiddink ranked England
in relation to the United States after watching his Turkey side head
for the
beaches early in Philadelphia. Like England in Graz, the USA
recovered a first-half deficit with a heightened response. Turkey
persisted
for an hour until Jozy Altidore poked America level. After that they

In its zeal to create better soccer prospects, the youth soccer
community in the U.S. had crammed more and more games and tournaments
into tight schedules, leaving little time for the necessary repetitions
that might not come in a game but that are fundamental to the pursuit of
professional-grade skills. Youth soccer, the task force decided, had to
be brought back to basics: lots of practice interspersed with a few
good games against quality opposition.

"He's kind of a calming
influence. I think we were too hectic on the ball in the first half and
he kind of settled us a little bit when he got the ball, and it helped
us a lot." That is Landon Donovan, talking about Jose Francisco Torres
-- and in particular the effect that Torres had on the U.S. team when he
subbed in for the second half of Saturday's game against Turkey.

there are plenty of photos of smiling kids, and that’s always fun.

Laporta’s Era is almost gone. Regardless of all the controversy, there
is no doubt that the club was subject to a radical transition on all
aspects. The team success, added to the revolutionary development of
Media coverage, Internet growth, and sport’s marketing progress,
introduced Barcelona to a massive number of football fans across the
globe. That’s always good news as it creates opportunities. Yet, for a
club like Barcelona, it is also a challenge.
