It was a question suitable for a head of state, but Havelange, who was merely the president of FIFA, or Fédération Internationale de Football Association, soccer's governing body, didn't blanch. Just over two weeks to go until England opens its World Cup campaign against the USA in Rustenburg and manager Fabio Capello has a bunch of unresolved questions. Not a big deal per se, everybody has them at this stage. Yet finding the right answers will likely determine how far England gets in this competition. Here are five Capello conundrums:

A class above is how Guus Hiddink ranked England in relation to the United States after watching his Turkey side head for the beaches early in Philadelphia. Like England in Graz, the USA recovered a first-half deficit with a heightened response. Turkey persisted for an hour until Jozy Altidore poked America level. After that they were on the plane home. In its zeal to create better soccer prospects, the youth soccer community in the U.S. had crammed more and more games and tournaments into tight schedules, leaving little time for the necessary repetitions that might not come in a game but that are fundamental to the pursuit of professional-grade skills. Youth soccer, the task force decided, had to be brought back to basics: lots of practice interspersed with a few good games against quality opposition.
