THREE matches, three formations. Having ditched 4-4-2 for 3-5-2 against Croatia, Steve McClaren seemed to adopt a “when in Rome” strategy last night when he sent out England in a 4-3-3 system that mirrored their hosts. At this rate, had there been another England match scheduled next month, we would probably have seen Terry Venables’s Christmas tree formation dusted down for the festive season.

Palacio: Well, my idol was Guillermo Barros Schelotto, who now is my teammate. So that is also like a dream come true for me. As a youngster I always admired him, so to play on the same team as him is huge. I always watched his games and tried to copy as many things of him as possible.

The MLS Youth Development Initiative

Starting in 2007, Major League Soccer is requiring each of its 13 teams to start a youth program, beginning with at least two teams right away. The long-range goal is for each club to have six youth teams, with ages ranging from Under-14 to Under-25, to develop their own talent.
