Monopoly Soccer:
Northern California suffered under a “Soccer Monopoly” for approximately 40 years – as long as the Eastern Europeans suffered under the “Political Monopoly” imposed on them by the Soviet Union.
Just as some Eastern European people preferred the “monopoly they knew” to the unknown of freedom, we are hearing of “soccer people” who would prefer to revert back to a “Soccer Monopoly.
This view of “freedom” as something that can be turned back for the “perceived self interest” of a few “established” Clubs is both short sighted and not in keeping with the principle of freedom of players and parents.
That short sighted view is also based on the idea that the number of soccer players who would like to play at the high level that comes with a year round schedule is limited - that if a new Club has excellent players – they must be taken from another Club.
There are many thousands of young players waiting for the opportunity to play at a higher level – to learn over time – how to be a stronger player. When the new Clubs – and old – begin to excite these young players and families by teaching them how to play and enjoy our wonderful sport – the number of Clubs will need to increase by the hundreds to handle the increased number of players.
Germany has 22,000 Soccer Clubs for a population of 80,000,000. What number will Northern California have in 10 years? With about 200 Clubs today for a population of about 10,000,000 it will obviously be a lot more than that, but probably less than the 2,500 using the German model and ratio.
The established Soccer Clubs need to learn to compete in a friendly manner as they build and improve a Soccer Club worthy of players and families hoping for a high level learning experience in the sport they love. Freedom is the ally of Clubs that are working to improve and become better Clubs, but the enemy of those wishing a return to “Monopoly Soccer”.
The future will not treat kindly those Clubs entrenched in a not very succesful system (compared to the World) – attempting to hold back the energy unleashed by the end of the Soccer Monopoly.
Recent history is replete with examples of Countries catching up in activities (sports and others) in relatively short periods of time. A fine example is the very successful Chinese Olympic Curling team that moved to Canada so they could learn from the best and play against the best.
For all of the interest, energy and money spent on soccer at the Youth Level, America has not kept up with the World in developing either the professional leagues or the thousands of players that would play on those elite teams – sadly – very few of which have been formed.
The good news is that American youth soccer is very obviously on the move! Clubs and coaches now understand that part-time schedules are fine for those who enjoy playing soccer for a few months. However, for the many thousands of players who love soccer and want to become the best they can be – a sensible year round schedule works best.

what point does he get tough with his players, he was asked ahead of
last
night’s league fixture against Mallorca? “When they don’t seem clear
about
objectives,” he answered, a bit wearily. Those who follow the European
champions put questions to Guardiola that betray the fact he seems new,
mysterious, a freshman in a post commonly occupied by veterans.

In March of 2009, U.S. Soccer National Staff Coach Rene Miramontes
led 45 coaches to Buenos Aires, Argentina, for the first international
coaching education trip through the U.S. Soccer Coaching Department.
Miramontes will now lead 44 coaches to Madrid, Spain, for a week-long
trip. Miramontes spoke with CoachesNet ahead of the week-long trip to
Madrid to discuss the coaching education experience provided by the
international workshop.
