“The Dutch are at their best when they combine the system with individual creativity.” – Hubert Smeets

Rinus Michels’ association with Ajax was a truly lifelong one. Born in February 1928 just a stone’s throw from the Olympisch Stadion, Michels began playing in the club’s junior ranks in 1940 aged 12 and quickly marked himself out as an industrious young forward. Having had his career put on hold by the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands during World War Two, Michels eventually broke into the Ajax first team in 1946.

Cruyff’s Corner: The Balon d’Or? It’s for Xavi

The following is a translation of Johan Cruyff’s weekly article in El Periodico.  The original can be found here.

Johan Cruyff’s key points.

Having three finalists vying for the world’s best player award is a privilege and an honour for Barca, for all cules.

Next Monday, there will be no more uncertainty. Messi, Xavi or Iniesta – one of the three will win the 2010 Balon d’Or. And all three are from the same team, which speaks well of the pure potential of the teamwork on which they feed off each other. Football is played with 11 players, a ball and the rest are their movements. They do it on a field 60 by 100 meters and everything is decided in half a meter. Not much more. How then do you decide who is the best in a team sport?

Why Ajax Are No Longer Dutch Masters
Category: Coaches Education on 05 Jan 2011

For football fans of a certain age, the name Ajax resonates with history, bringing back memories of the early 70s when the famous club from Amsterdam won the European Cup three years in a row, displaying a brand of “total football” that also inspired the Dutch national team in its dazzling run to two World Cup finals.

Guided by the prodigious talents of the legendary Johan Cruyff and ably supported by the likes of Ruud Krol, Johan Neeskens and Arie Haan, Ajax established themselves as one of the foremost clubs in European football with the distinctive white shirts with the vertical red band down the front becoming the epitome of “cool”. It wasn’t just the fact that they won so much, but the striking manner of their victories, as they exhibited a unique blend of individual creativity and progressive tactics.

Global Player of the Year: Xavi
Category: Coaches Education on 27 Dec 2010
Sometimes, statistics can obscure. They can disguise shortcomings, flatter reputations or fail to communicate brilliance. After all, no sane critic would judge Pele on the percentage of his shots that hit the target, or rate Franz Beckenbauer on the strength of his ProZone figures. But sometimes, statistics can illuminate, and cold, hard, tangible facts do serve to illustrate just why Barcelona and Spain star Xavi is ESPNsoccernet's Global Player of the Year for 2010. After all, the notoriously self-effacing playmaker is unlikely to sing his own praises. We will have to let his statistics do the talking. Click here to read more..

How did tactics develop in 2010?
Category: Coaches Education on 27 Dec 2010

In August, I wrote a piece for the Guardian's pre-season supplement in which I speculated that, after the World Cup and Internazionale's success in the Champions League, we may be about to witness a return to reactive football. Since when we've seen probably the most attacking Premier League in living memory, which goes to show two things: first, never believe anything anybody writes when trying to predict the future of football; and second, the World Cup is no longer a bellwether.

Cruyff’s Corner: A team with an insatiable hunger
Category: Coaches Education on 22 Dec 2010

The following is a translation of Johan Cruyff’s weekly article in El Periodico.  The original can be found here.

Johan Cruyff’s key points.

Barcelona took, in the last seven matches, a 31 to 1 aggregate and the truth is it conducts itself impressively, uniquely.

About a week ago I had lunch with Pep Guardiola. It’s been some time since we last met even though we spoke [on the phone] often. It was nice, a very pleasant encounter between two coaches who likes nothing more than to talk about what excite us the most; football. Without saying, we don’t have to look for a subject. And of course, obviously the main topic of our conversation ended up being, or rather, started out about Barca.
