In
the 15 years of the Premier League the number of participating English
footballers has increased from 128 to 246. So why did the Professional
Footballers' Association yesterday demand the League introduce a quota
system to encourage the production of native talent? Because the number
of foreign players, during the same period, has increased from 24 to
311. As a result, argue the Players' Union in a report with the
suitably melodramatic title "Meltdown", young players are being
squeezed out by the purchase of cheap foreign footballers.
