12:30pm - First training session at Valle Verde –
After breakfast, we hopped on the bus and went to train at Valle Verde (the training complex of Chivas).
Training session :
Warm up  and coordination – 15 minutes
Possession – 4 V 2 – 15 minutes
Combination passing towards goal – 30 minutes
11 V 11 inter squad game – 20 minutes
Cooling down – 10 minutes
The boys could really feel the altitude and the travel.  It was great to train and remember why we are here.  It was very hard to breathe and the legs were heavy.  We looked sharp in the game at the end.
After training, we went to the tournament headquarters to get the player credentials (passes).  Each player received a bag with a program and Chivas gifts such as a scarf, hat,  and towel.
We went back to the hotel and ate a late lunch .  After I went to Estadio Tres de Marzo to see Tecos – Chivas, while the boys watched the game in the lobby. The game ended 1-1.  The game was sold out and I was sitting  with the porras (the rowdy fans) behind the goal.
After the game, I grabbed a taxi and went quickly to Estadio Jalisco to see Atlas – Vera Cruz.  My good friend Tony Chavarria flew in to study Futbol for the next 10 days.  He is one of the directors at Ballistic United Soccer Club in Pleasanton, California.  Deejae Johnson of Marin FC is also here observing the US U14 National team and attended with several staff members.
Once again we were in with the Atlas fans who sang the whole game.  What an environment, it was amazing to see entire families at the game with mothers, fathers, children all singing the club songs.  It reminded me at what a young age children in most countries become passionate about the worlds game.
After the game we met several U.S. Soccer Federation staff members at the Prieto’s  Sky Box (Max Prieto is the organizer for a few past tour’s Z Soccer has made for coaches and teams to Guadaljara and his son Alejandro is an agent specializing in young talented players).
Saturday, January 26, 2008 – Chivas USA vs Autlan , Mexico
The team from South Africa could not attend at the last moment, so a local team Autlan was invited.
We woke up and had breakfast at 6:30am and left on the bus to Verde Valle at 7:20pm.
Chivas USA – System 1:4:3:3
Autlan – System 1:4:4:2
The game started very rough with Autlan pressuring all over the field.  It took 15 minutes for us to settle in and get over the nerves, and then we started to keep possession and make some combinations to get forward.  We did get into the last third several times , but were not sharp enough in the final pass, individual action or crosses.
Neither team has many real chances, and the half was played at very high pace.
At half-time , we spoke about keeping the ball in the midfield and being more dangerous in the half of the opponent.
Both teams became more dangerous, Autlan hit the crossbar.  Then Mario Ledezma barely missed a lob over the keeper after a nice through ball from the Omar Becera. Again we had another attack and after a near miss, Autlan countered in the 11th minute of the 2nd ½, one of our central defender’s cleared the ball and our midfield did not recover fast enough and their captain collected a ball and shot a cannon from 30+ meters into the upper corner.
The goal actually lifted the boys and they attacked relentlessly , looking for the equalizer.  After a switch in the midfield and combination down the left side, Armando Rocha, played a perfect cross to Polo Morales who headed it back to Mario Ledezma who volleyed off the crossbar.
A few minutes later on a corner in the 15th minute , Autlan found an unmarked forward racing to the near post who buried a header for the 2-0.
Although we could have played much better, there were some very positive aspects, especially the solid play of the defense and goalkeeper.  The midfield and forwards were there best, and hope to be back on form in the match tomorrow at Estadio Jalisco at 12pm against Necaxca.

Necaxa 0 – Caracas 1
Tigres 1 – Atletico Juventud 2
After the game, we calmed down in the locker room, showered and watched the first ½ of Necaxa vs Carracas before heading back to the hotel for lunch.
The team then went to Estadio Tres de Marzo for an opening ceremonies and then watched the last game of the day, Chivas Guadaljara vs Real Madrid which ended with Real Madrid winning 3-2.
By now the boys were very tired and looking forward to dinner and a good nights rest.
After a busy day, the Technical Staff realized why the youth players in the U.S. need this type of International competition for their development.  Another quality day of futbol with plenty of passion, desire, talent and hard work by all the teams.
Please forward this blog on to anyone who might enjoy it.
Saludos,
Andrew Ziemer
