Monday, January 29, 2008 – Chivas USA vs Caracas FC ,  4pm – San Javier
Tony Chavarria from Ballistic United Soccer Club in Pleasanton, and I woke early and taxied to Verde Valle to watch the Chivas Professional Team Train.  Preki (Chivas USA Head Coach) and Dennis te Kloese were also observing and looking at potential players for Chivas USA.
Training session Chivas Guadalajara 1st Team – 9:30am
Staff – Head Coach – Efrain Flores, Assistant Coach - Juan Carlos Ortega , Assistant Coach - Manuel Diaz ,Goalkeeper Coach - Luis Valls , Physical Coach - Guillermo Hernandez.
Warm –up by Physical Coach - Guillermo Hernandez :  Coordination, Juggling solo, juggling in pairs, hurdles, short sprints, passing in twos.  Guillermo took the first 20 minutes of training and switched from exercises with the ball and ones without the ball.
Crossing, 1V1 and 2V2 from several different organizations.
Games – 6V6 with 2 separate organizations with goalkeepers.
After the training session we watched the 2nd ½ of Tahuichi vs Nacional Paraguay. Tahuichi lost 0-2 which makes for a very interesting last day of games in Group A tomorrow.
The four of us then caught a ride with Jaime Pajarito (Head Scout for the the Chivas Fuerzas Basicas and all time best #9 for Chivas) back to the hotel to meet the team for lunch.
The game was at San Javier which is a private sports club with soccer, tennis, golf, and many other sports.  The pitch was a bit small in length , but a very good quality surface.
Chivas USA – System – In Ball possession - 1:4:4:2, Ball possession opponent 1:4:4:2
Carracas FC – System -  In Ball possession - 1:4:4:2, Ball possession opponent 1:4:4:2
Due to suspension’s and tired players, we made a few changes to the line-up.  Jose Diaz came back in at the #5, Hector Molina moved to the #8, Gerson Mayen was back from suspension at the #6, Mike Muniz came in at the #10 and Polo Morales came back in up top at the #9.
We had seen Caracas F.C. three times before and knew that they had 3 very dangerous players – one at the left midfield and two forwards.  In ball possession they played very direct and when we had the ball they backed off and let us play from the back.
Chivas USA started on fire, combining and created several half chances. The only attacks from Caracas FC were from goal kicks and longballs from their outside defenders.
Our defense did a great job of winning head balls and the 2nd balls and were able to develop our possession game.
When Caracas attacked, they pushed their outside midfielders up and had two holding midfielders in the center with  a big gap (similar to Atletico Juventud).
In change of ball possession opponent to ball possession we were able to find one of our free midfielders and control the game by keeping possession, switching the field and serving through balls and crosses.
Midway through the ½ goalkeeper Juan Quirioz began to dominate the box and win every air ball that entered the area.
We had several good chances off of combination between Polo and Mike Muniz and a through ball to Arnoldo Salazar.  Our outside midfielders were getting very involved with several quality balls switched through the midfield, but could not find our attackers in front of the goal.
At half time we changed Mario Ledezma for Polo Morales and continued where we left off at halftime, keeping the ball and going at the opponent relentlessly while playing solid defense all over the pitch.
The momentum was building and we felt that the goal was going to come.  Dennis te Kloese has told the boys that if we scored we would go bowling and if we won we would go the Pre -Qualification game for Copa Liberdatores between Atlas and La Paz from Bolivia.
The goal did come at minute 50, Cesar Zamora carved a nice through ball to Arnoldo Salazar who beat one man and played a nice ball to the first post to Mario Ledezma for the 1st goal of the tournament.
The last 20 minutes were non stop from both teams, Caracas trying to equalize and us playing strong defense and going after the 2-0.
Our goal at half-time was to put together a full 70 minute game and not make any mistakes and get the 3pts.
We succeeded and when the final whistle blew it was 1-0.  Finally we got our win.
The team cooled down and a few dozen little kids came on the field , surrounding the Chivas USA players and received autographs.
The team has been growing with each game and deserved the result.  Now the question is can we keep it up against Tigres on Wednesday at Verde Valle.
It was a great bus ride home with a team of excited players replaying the game.
We had dinner with the team and after dinner, Preki, Dennis te Kloese, Sacha van der most van Spijk, Tony Chavarria, Cuco Mansilla had an incredible talk about soccer in the U.S. and the lack of Soccer Culture and Tactical Awareness and the positive and negative aspects of the structure of U.S. Soccer.
Preki is an incredible resource and  a true student of the game and has a very good idea of all aspects of what it takes to succeed in Professional Soccer.  He came down to Guadalajara to support the youth and we discussed the need to create a better connection between the Chivas USA Youth Department and the 1st team.
Preki talked a lot about the need for the youth to watch more soccer on T.V. whenever possible and to study and live the game.  Preki feels that the Chivas youth players need to come watch the first team train and see the level of play.
Today, the Chivas USA U18 boys have set a standard for themselves.  Now the challenge is to rise to the same level of intensity every time they step on the field in both trainings and games
I am off to bed, because we have to rise early and take on Tigres of Mexico at 10am at Verde Valle.
We do not have a chance to go to the next round and have already arranged friendly games on Friday with the Japanese National Team and Saturday with the U.S. National Team.
Hasta manana,
Andrew Ziemer
