Heracles/2005 Peter Bosz Head Coach 1. First Team’s Aim - The goal is to stay in the first division – Dutch Eredivisie 2. Background Heracles had been in the second division for 20 years. Last year they were promoted and it was a little bit of a surprise. In the second division their team was stronger than opponent 9 out of 10 times, so they played in opponents half. In the first division it has been different. The teams they were playing against were going to be stronger then them. First thing was to decide how going to play. There style would be a 30 meter block- right around half field. The second thing Peter did was analyze players and see which players could play in the 1st division. They thought 9 players could. The next step was to bring in talent. The problem was they had the lowest budget in the first division with only 6 million euros to spend. It would be hard to bring in a big name because of so little money and the small nature of the club. They needed experience so they brought in a few experienced players and some young talent. Peter put the experienced players in the spine of the team and put the young talent around them. 1st step- look at how going to play 2nd step- which players can make it from current team 3rd step- Bring in players 4th step- Now have 20 players can still bring in 2 more (but only quality) 3. Advice When Peter was a player his coach from France told him if he can get these 3 players from the team to gain his trust- his job would be half done. • The leader off the field • The leader on the field • The leader whom is a joker/crazy They need to work together because you can put all the other players behind one of these guys and they will follow. The mentality he wants his team to have is, “ Put your knife in your teeth and get ready to board the ship” “If you don’t have the best players, you need the best team” –Peter Bosh Q. How many points do you think you need to stay in the first division? He thinks they need 34 points. However, he does not think in terms of points, he thinks in organization of the team. Does nothing to think 3 games ahead, only the next match. Q. What is the best day to take off? He thinks 2 days after the game. The day after a day they need to do recuperation, they second day rest. Q. Who is on your staff? He has an assistant coach, sports psychologist, goalkeeper coach (Frans Hoek), and a trainer. Q. How do you plan ahead? He has a big overall plan for the year, then has a plan for shorter term of 6 weeks. Q. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a 1:4:3:3? With a 1-4-3-3 every part of the field is taken. This system gives the best field occupation. There are a lot of triangles for support. This allows for many different tactics, looking at the different qualities of the players. If other team decides to guard 1v1 the wings can get as wide as possible to create more space. The disadvantages are the gaps on the sides. |
